36 years ago today, on October 11, 1987, Richard Carpenter released his first solo album, ‘Time.’
The album featured artists like Dionne Warwick on ‘In Love Alone,’ Dusty Springfield on ‘Something in Your Eyes,’ Scott Grimes on ‘That’s What I Believe,’ and Herb Alpert on a trumpet solo for the song ‘When Time Was All We Had,’ among several others.
“Something In Your Eyes” was a song originally intended for Karen Carpenter, Richard’s late sister and other half of the famous duo ‘Carpenters,’ to sing– but the story goes that the week she was supposed to hear it, she passed away at the age of 32 from complications due to Anorexia Nervosa.

On the album notes, Richard writes:
“Recording for this album commenced on July, 1985, with the final mix-down occuring on July 5, 1987. I realize this album has taken more than the usual time to complete; however, I held production up for almost a year while A&M Studios (my second home) was experiencing a renaissance.
Many thanks to Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield for their beautiful performances on “In Love Alone” and “Something In Your Eyes” respectively, and to 15-year-old Scott Grimes for his spirited reading of “That’s What I Believe”. (I believe young Scott to have quite a future in music).

Lastly, I wish to thank my friend Herb Alpert, not only for contributing the moving flugelhorn solo on “When Time Was All We Had”, but for his guidance and continuing support. Herb, along with Jerry Moss, Gil Friesden and the A&M staff comprise a special family with whom I’m most proud to be associated.”
